Tteokbokki (떡볶이) is a popular Korean street food dish of spicy, chewy rice cakes. The name literally translates to "stir-fried rice cake". It's also known as ddukbokki, ddeokbokki, dukbokki, or topokki.
The rice cakes are stir-fried in a thick sauce made with seaweed or fish stock, gochujang paste, and gochugaru chili flakes. The sauce may also contain vegetables and fish cakes, but generally no meat is added.
Tteokbokki is a popular street food and is often enjoyed at home. It's more common in the winter.
Tteokbokki used to be an exclusive dish eaten at the palace. It became popular due to the widespread availability of red pepper sauce and wheat
